El dinero es un medio de cambio y medida de valor que ha sido representado por diferentes objetos físicos; desde conchas, granos de cacao, plumas de ave, metales, hasta monedas y billetes. Hoy en día el dinero ha tomado la identidad de datos que circulan a través de redes de telecomunicaciones y que pueden dar la vuelta al mundo en tan sólo unos segundos.

Esta última forma es la que conocemos como dinero electrónico, el cual se intercambia a través de Internet o redes privadas. Este dinero se encuentra virtualmente en una cuenta bancaria, de ahí viaja por la red para llegar a otras cuentas y así realizar las transacciones.
